DISCOVER FOOTBALL is a Berlin-based NGO that uses football as a tool to promote womxn's / LGBTIQ rights. Through our international projects, we create a platform for female empowerment and intercultural understanding. Since our foundation in 2009, we have created the world's leading network of female football activists to advocate for a world in which girls and womxn can engage in sports without any kind of discrimination.
At the Festival of Football, we will display three documentaries, which highlight our work and the lives and situations of women in football across the globe. Our longstanding media partners Deutsche Welle produced two of the films. Besides reporting on most of our events, they accompanied several of our journeys, allowing for a deep insight into our projects and a personal yet professional connection with our participants, as well as with our team.

In 2022 Qatar will host the men's FIFA Wold Cup. But what about the women? Will they benefit from the event? The team from Discover Football travelled to Qatar's capital Doha, to meet and play a friendly with the women's national team players of Qatar.

Women being able to play football in India is not a given. But at the Discover Football Festival in Goa, more than 100 women get the opportunity to discover the game and a different way of life.
We joined three of them on their journey: Farheen, a Muslim from Mumbai who's only been playing football for a short time; Christin Cynthia from Goa, who dreams of becoming a professional; and Tsomo Mungod, who wants to show the world what Tibetan women can do with a ball at their feet.
3) The Woman in the Middle - International Conference for Female Referees 2018
D / 2018 / 9 min / Documentary
Nadja Krüger / DISCOVER FOOTBALL
English / OV
In 2018, Discover Football welcomed referees from all over the world to Berlin to exchange, network and to advance their skills and knowledge.
We wanted to find out - what motivates these women to stand in the middle and take charge of a match? In addition, which challenges do they face and what keeps them going when they face abuse? Both women coaches and referees operate in a male-dominated field and often encounter gender-based discrimination in their work. Can they leave their match day prejudice and differences behind to build a common strategy and voice to advance women's football and women's rights?

I am part of DISCOVER FOOTBALL since the Football Festival 2016. Before I was already joining the DF CLUB where I learned how to play. There my interest for the sport developed into a much deeper desire to face up to the whole subject of women's football. I am a true Berliner but through my university time in which I focused on different religions and cultures I became quite international. A feeling I still love to hold on to. Therefore, DISCOVER FOOTBALL’S transnational approach is especially important to me. It fills me with extra pleasure helping women to connect worldwide.
Driving social change through football is my passion and I have enjoyed being part of various aspects of the game - as a player, coach, league administrator, association staff and activist. I joined DISCOVER FOOTBALL in 2010 for its first festival, and have a professional background in sport science and psychology, with expertise in education through football. This ranges from topics such as women's empowerment, inclusion and anti-discrimination, sexual reproductive health rights, HIV to FGM and child marriage. My work in football education projects has taken me to placements in India, France, Germany, Tanzania and the United Kingdom.
I support DISCOVER FOOTBALL since 2010 mainly as photographer and Public Relations Manager. I am a Germany based photographer who mainly focusing on women’s and human rights. I strive to combine the aesthetics and expressive power of photography with the goal of letting the world know about social, ecological and economic injustices. Professionally I am a press spokeswoman for SAP, a global IT company.
I have worked as an organizer for DISCOVER FOOTBALL since 2012. Besides women’s empowerment, my focus at DISCOVER FOOTBALL is on LGBTIQ rights. I am a professional social worker and trainer for LGBTIQ sensitization with a background in Systemic Counselling. In my free time, I am an active football player with DFC Kreuzberg, a queer feminist football club founded by Discover Football.
